It’s kind of amazing how many things you can create with washi tape these days, isn’t it? Wall decals, invitation designs, monograms, furniture, pets… okay, some of those were an exaggeration, but seriously, if you have a Pinterest account then you know what I mean. Alas, I sort of caved and hopped on the train, too, which is how this cake topper bunting (that I made for Love, Wed, Bliss) and the matching cake plate came about. Want to whip up your own patterned cake plate? Here’s how –
All you have to do is alternate the tape, leaving excess on the sides, then use an exacto knife to trim the edges & voila! It’s not exactly reinventing the wheel, but it does make it pretty cute!

Very cute cake plate. Have never used Washi tape. Where do you buy it? Can you actually USE the cake plate with the tape in place? Doesn’t it come off when washed?
Thanks!
You can get washi tape from lots of places these days– any specialty paper shop, target, michael’s, the cutest varieties are normally online. Yes, you can still use the cake plate, the cake is sitting on a round white cake board just like most cakes at events, so when you cut it, it doesn’t affect the tape at all. As far as washing it, the tape will come off. It’s more of just a temporary way to tie in the plate to the decor, which is nice so you can always update it to whatever party you’re having! :)
Looks great! very innovative. Must remember this trick :)
This is adorable! Such a great way to fancy up the cake plate specifically for an event!
I’ve nominated you for the One Lovely Blog and Very Inspiring Blog Awards! Check it out here: http://thethreadaffect.com/2012/06/09/nomination-love/
Thanks, Megan!
I have seen a lot of washi bunting but this one is very different! Love it!
