DIY Ring Toss Game — This fun DIY Flamingo Ring Toss Game is an entertaining hit for kids and adults and even for those without a yard.
It’s safe to say there’s a sure fire flamingo trend happening these days. And I’m so totally all up on that train! (Don’t you love my way with words?)
Although I wouldn’t exactly call myself a yard ornament kind of girl (and that’s if I even had a yard). So you won’t find any plastic flamingos flocking around my town house.
That being said, I’ve been known to get a little creative with my choice of plastic animals (not weird, I promise).
And this time I’ve gone and made a DIY Flamingo Ring Toss Game that’s perfect for your backyard parties. You can make this in no time. And you can use it with or without a grassy area on hand!
For those of you that do have a backyard, congratulations! I’m slightly jealous.
Especially because you also get to skip the second half of this tutorial. So consider yourself winning today because this would be even more easy to set and make!
Outdoor Games | The Rules Of Ring Toss
The rules to this game are fairly simple to make up. I say that because is there really a set way to play “ring toss”?
I’m pretty sure every kid ever has played at least 1,000 different renditions of this game. So you can really use as many or as little flamingos as you want.
The point of the backyard game still stays the same: All players must stand in the same spot and try to toss as many rings around the target (the flamingos) as possible.
You can line them all up or make harder targets by spreading them out, with the ones further away being worth more points. Ring toss encourages active play and lots of hand eye coordination.
Being that this is a DIY game, the rules and set up are totally up to you!
Bocce ball, tic tac toe, lawn darts, cornhole game, lawn bowling, giant Jenga — they’re all popular backyard games but nothing is as all-age friendly as ring toss.
Materials Needed to Make The DIY Flamingo Ring Toss Game Set
Plastic flamingos with stakes — The quantity is up to how many or as few as you want. You can also purchase different sizes.
Lightweight plastic rings — Ring toss can also be played with rope rings. However, I prefer plastic rings since they’re easier to throw (and paint). Plus, they look prettier too! You can purchase plastic rings at any party supplies store or online.
Spray paint for plastic surfaces in the colors of your choice — Optional only needed if you don’t have a yard or if you don’t want to stake your flamingos into the grass.
Planters — Optional only needed if you don’t have a yard or if you don’t want to stake your flamingos into the grass. I purchased mine from Ikea.
Sand, rocks or soil — Optional only needed if you don’t have a yard or if you don’t want to stake your flamingos into the grass.
How Can You Play This DIY Ring Toss Game Without A Yard?
If you don’t have a yard, you’ll also need planters filled with heavy sand or packed down soil to stick the flamingos in. You can mix and match the types and height of your planters too.
The planters are an easy solution so that you can play indoor or outdoor.
I spray painted my planters to color coordinate with my flamingos. Once you have all your supplies, you don’t even need to do anything extra to create the game.
BUT if you’re in this for the styling, you can even spray paint each set of rings prettier colors. Just be sure each player as the same amount of colored rings to tell their scores apart.
Spray Painting On Plastic
Make sure to use a plastic surface specific spray paint so it will adhere better to your planters and rings. This also avoids having your paint chip off.
I used Montana Cans spray paint for this project. Depending on how glossy of a look you want, you may also need to prime the planters and rings. (I preferred a more matte look).
If you don’t have spray paint formulated specifically for plastic, you can still use it. However, keep in mind that your items will have to be primed.
How To Make The DIY Flamingo Ring Toss Yard Game If You Have A Backyard
Have a nice grassy area available? You can skip the pots and just stick the flamingos straight into the ground! I wasn’t kidding when I told you how easy this DIY backyard game was!
If you’d like, you can still spray paint your rings (for the aesthetics).

We really love your site, it has good content, Thank you.
Cute idea, on materials list it doesn’t say what size flamigos are, want the size you used in your DIY. There are several flamingos on your amazon link so don’t know which one to use. Also, you mentioned pots from IKEA, do you have order number and size of pot, is it plastic or ceramic? Thanks.
Hi Tracy! Unfortunately, the original size flamingos I bought are no longer listed as available, but the posts are white ceramic 6in from IKEA!
What is the size, how many flamingo ‘ in a set and how much?

HI! I would lOve tO use thEsE for my OUtside wedding reception, but im unsure of sizes? Home depot has great flamingos on sale, but they’re pretty large. I also think the rings i was looking at on amazon were awfully small. Any advice would be great!! Thank you in advance!
Hi Kate! We always get our flamingos off of Amazon. The heads are pretty small, so any size ring should be good!

What an adorable idea! I may just have to make this for our patio.
