Discover the perfect way to organize your home with these Color Block DIY Mudroom lockers that add a pop of style to your space.
These are not your token lockers, my friends! Don’t get me wrong. We love a good organization project and an array of rainbow colors as much as the next girl.
But it’s nice to DIY something in colors to keep in our house instead of it only living in the studio!
To pull it off, we teamed up with Ace Hardware and Amy Howard to pick out the perfect, subtle chalk-based paint colors at our local store. (Hello, no priming, sanding, or stripping required!)
In case you’re into the brighter colors we usually go for, Ace Hardware can mix any color of Amy Howard at Home One Step paints using a tintable base. The skies the limit here, folks!
Materials Needed
Plain wooden storage lockers — The plain wooden lockers that we had delivered came ASSEMBLED and with the gold hooks and all. How amazing is that?! Literally, all you’re doing here is painting on your chosen accent colors. So honestly, this is more of a furniture hack than a true DIY.
Paint – Since we liked the look of the finished wood from the original lockers, we decided to only paint certain cubbies in accent colors. We also steered away from going too hard on the bright colors so that it looked more adult than what you would think of a traditional locker set to be. So we ended up using Amy Howard at Home One Step Chalk-Based in Cherbourg, Barefoot in the Park, and Easy Street.
How to Customize Your DIY Mudroom Lockers
1 — With painter’s tape, we taped off the sides of the cubby boxes that were going to be painted.
2 — Paint one coat on and let dry for 30 minutes before painting the second coat for optimal coverage.
We also used an angled brush to make sure the cut in was defined for each color. The beauty of the Amy Howard chalk based paints is that you don’t have to do any sanding or finishing of the surface. Hence, the “one-step” portion of the name.
Let us just say that not having to sand each individual cubby is a BEAUTIFUL thing, my friends!
3 — Then, allow the DIY lockers to dry and set completely and style for your entryway, mud room, office, you name it!
We’re pretty much professional hoarders at this point. So we had noooo problem filling this baby right up. It’s a lifesaver for decluttering an entryway and watercolor artwork (which you can download and print for free here). Plus, it isn’t bad on the eyes either.
A big thanks to our friends at Ace Hardware and Amy Howard for partnering with us on this post! If you’re working on a paint project in your home this month, be sure to head to your local Ace.
