Garden Stones – DIY Faux Grass Decorative Stepping Stones
With these easy-to-follow DIY decorative stepping garden stones, bring a little color to the back patio without needing any kind of lawn service.
When I was growing up, I used to mow our lawn in the summer to get more than my usual allowance to do extra things with my friends.
As it turned out, we realized I was allergic to bees after two not-so-pretty run-ins with yellow jackets. Needless to say that squashed my mowing the lawn days pretty quickly.
Fast forward ten years later, and I still don’t mow the lawn. Mostly because I don’t have one. But even if I did, I wouldn’t do it. That’s where faux grass comes into play…
I wanted to bring a little color and texture to the back terrace without needing any kind of lawn service. AND also, I didn’t want to have something else that I could potentially kill.
Instead, I decided to glue astroturf to inexpensive concrete stepping stones. Bet you didn’t see that one coming!
Materials and Tools Needed to Make Faux Grass Garden Stepping Stones
I love a quick home decor DIY that packs a big punch, and these custom garden steps do just that!
You only need a handful of materials to recreate our garden stones, and they’re also super affordable.
You can make them in any shape or size depending on the concrete pavers that you use.
Box cutter
Straight edge ruler (optional, just for ease of cutting)
You’ll be adhering the turf to existing stepping stones, so you can make as many or as few as you’d like.
Also, be sure to buy the correct amount of turf that you need based on how many stones you would like to complete.
Steps To Make A DIY Faux Grass Decorative Stepping Stones
Step 1 – First, cut a 12×12 inch square from the astroturf to fit perfectly over top of the stone.
You can use the straight edge to do this. But I found laying the turf along the edge of the stone and using that as my straight edge was better for me.
Step 2 – Be sure to clean up the edges as much as possible (unlike mine above!), because once you glue it down there’s no going back!
Step 3 – Lastly, use a foam brush to smear a very thick layer of glue on the stone and then lay the turf over top and press down.
You’ll want the edges to be firmly glued down too, but try not to let the glue go too far to the edge to where the glue spills over.
It doesn’t dry clear, and you won’t be able to get it off later.
Once your garden stones are completed, simply make sure that you have a nice, level place in your garden to place them and enjoy!
Grab a cocktail (like a Spicy Skinny Margarita) and enjoy the outdoors!

How to Maintain Your DIY Garden Stones
Thankfully, the astroturf and stone pavers are resilient outdoor decor elements.
To clean them, simply use your outdoor water hose and a rake or outdoor cloth to clear off any debris.
If needed, you can also use a pressure washer in a low-pressure setting to deep clean the garden stones.
The great part about garden stones is that you can easily remove and replace them if needed based on severe weather or wear and tear.
Now all you have to do is promise to limit yourself to the amount of these bad boys that you make!
I got kind of addicted to the outcome and love our little home garden!
It would be really awesome to do a checkerboard pattern on these for the patio too, don’t you agree?
