DIY Pie Macarons — We’re making sure you’re celebrating Thanksgiving with every kind of pie imaginable, including these mini DIY Pie Macarons!
I’ll eat pie in just about any form and preferably with a side of freshly scooped ice cream. That doesn’t exactly make me a connoisseur or anything (unless we’re talking queen of sugar high’s).
But I do like to think it entitles me to a little pie experimenting of my own. Of course, this wouldn’t be Sugar & Cloth if it wasn’t in the form of macarons.
So I’ve taken it upon myself to bring a little Thanksgiving touch to my favorite bite-sized dessert with these DIY Pie Macarons.
For the sake of winning bets, does anyone instantly recognize what type of pie the light green is? Jared and I have an on-going debate of whether or not people will know what it is without me having to explain myself.
And from the reactions around the studio so far, I’m losing…
Materials And Tools Needed To Make DIY Pie Macarons
- White macarons — Store brought or here’s how to make your own macarons recipe
- Edible food markers
- Gel food colors
- Food dedicated paint brushes
- White cookie/royal icing with a star tip
- Almond extract
How To Make DIY Pie Macarons
Combine a one drop of orange gel coloring and a half a drop of yellow food coloring into almond extract and stir.
Pour a little of that mixture into a separate bowl and add a bit more almond extract to the second bowl, and stir.
These two colors will be what you use for the “pumpkin pie” and the “pie crusts”. The one that has more almond extract than color will be used the pie crusts. And the more saturated color will be the center of the pumpkin.
Use a paint brush to pie the edges of the crust around the macaron.
Then, draw criss-cross lines for some of the macarons to look like braided pie crusts.
Using food pens, color in the “berries” in between the painted lines until they look full.
For the pumpkin, lemon, and key lime (!!), paint the edges of the crusts, and then use food pens to color the centers.
When it’s dry, pipe a small star with cookie icing on top to look like whipped cream.
When you’re all done, you’ll have perfectly cute mini DIY Pie Macarons!
What “Flavor” Is the Mint Green Pie?
For the mint green DIY Pie Macaron pop quiz: It’s key lime! Come on, you guys!
Maybe it seems obvious to me since we just got back from a trip to Key West (home of key lime pie). But I don’t know how many other flavors out there have a mint green connotation!
Alright, alright. I know most of you won’t be adding hand-painted cookies to your list of Thanksgiving to-do’s, but they’re fun to look at right?!
