If this sweet little DIY pom pom cake doesn’t brighten your Thursday, I don’t know what will! Unless you had doughnuts for breakfast, in which case you owe the rest of us good vibes instead, but I’m not pointing fingers. Nonetheless, be sure to check out this ridiculously simple cake tutorial over on Julep today.
In case you’ve been wondering what’s happening behind the scenes at S+C lately, it can pretty much all be summed up in a very graphic image of me racing like a mad woman to finish deadlines for the rest of this week and next. I’ve also decided that I HAVE to get an intern or thirty. What are your alls thoughts on interns? Do they have to be through a college for credit, paid well, not paid at all if it’s through the university, any horror stories of things you wish you would’ve known before hand, is it easier just to pay for an assistant, do I need to preface working for us that I may or may not cry over cupcakes on certain days? Wow, if you stuck with me through that run-on sentence you’re already hired!
[…] after hearing all of your wise words from this post, and have decided that I need to admit that I need extra hands! That’s why we’re hiring […]
Check the law. I know in California, and I think the US, legally you have to either pay and intern or offer college credit. And, you can only offer the college credit if you have a degree in the area.
My experience with interns and assistants: when they were being paid they were way more committed and less likely to flake on me. I would start them at minimum wage for a trial period; I factored this cost in when I was billing clients. A hard working, dedicated assistant is worth their weight in GOLD!
Pay your intern!
I recently graduated college in Boston and have had some internships, all of which were unpaid. Most were during the summer when I came home to Los Angeles. Only one was for school credit but that was also during my final fall semester. I think we all need internships because they actually give us experience in the real world and opportunities to see how things work, which school just doesn’t teach us!
Because of legal reasons, usually they are only part time and have limited hours, although honestly I think the best interns will offer to stay later should you need the help (I would!). I usually would go in maybe three days a week, 10-3 or something like that, depending. One internship even reimbursed me for parking, which was super nice, and I got a big thank you gift too at the end.
Gaining experience is the main reason for internships, I think. I didn’t mind them being unpaid, as long as I could meet people and network and put it on my resume. I dislike internships that are for school credit only, since now that I’m graduated, I wouldn’t really be able to do that unless I took the extra effort to enroll in an internship class at a community college, which can be done..just kind of annoying that it’s “required,” and even then some won’t accept that.
I hadn’t really considered an intern outside of a university just because I would feel guilty not paying a hefty amount to be fair, so this is good to know! Thank you, Allie! xo
Love the cake =)
And as for interns…I just wrapped up my time with a summer intern and loved it!! My gal helped me out with anything from spreadsheet drafting and graphic design, to craft projectsโwhatever I was up to in the studio any given Tuesday (our work day together). I didn’t physically pay her, but offered her tons of little studio goodies and freebies. I was pretty up front about what I could offer her and so I think that helped to set the stage for a good collaboration.
Ultimately, she was in it to get creatively inspired and to get some Photoshop/InDesign experience, and I was in it to get my head above water ;) I highly recommend grabbing an intern!!
Ahhh, good to know. Thank you Carrie! Hope you’ve been well! xoxo
Love the cake:) Also, my experience with interns… a good, awesome assistant – who already knows what she’s doing is way worth the extra couple bucks an hour.
Noted! Thanks Victoria!
I’m a design student who’s going through the (often frustrating) internship process. In Canada there’s much debate and protest about unpaid internships. My opinion is that they don’t have to be a bad thing as long as the intern is gaining great knowledge and skills in return for their labour. I’ve had internships where I wasn’t paid and gained little experience and for that I was greatly disappointed and have regrets. As long as there is some sort of equal compensation, I think it’s fair!
p.s. that cake is adorable :)
Thank you for this, Gillian! I’ll definitely keep that in mind whether paid or not, I wouldn’t want anyone to feel like that didn’t gain anything from it!
I’m loving the pom pom cake. Regarding getting intern, in the UK unpaid/low paid internships are a big discussion point at the moment, fair work should be awarded with fair pay. So depending on what you want, 9-5 capable of doing the work you want and working 3 days to full time hire an assistant or pay an intern a fair wage.
Thanks so much for your feedback, I definitely agree fair work should be fairly awarded. What goes around comes around!
I don’t have much advice on the intern thing. So, I’m basically just here to tell you what a cute cake that is. :)
haha, thanks B!
Just FYI they don’t have the cake tutorial up. They have a treat bag tutorial up on Julep. And as far as interns go, in CA legally you have to provide school credit and pay them minimum wage.
She is right, its not there…what happen Julep?
Should be working now!
