After reading through lots of your applications, I’m SUPER excited to finally share the final reveal of the holiday living room makeover that we gifted with Lowe’s! A huge thank you everyone that applied after our announcement post! I considered it a major privilege to read through your heart felt stories. It was really challenging to narrow them down to one.
In the end, we were lucky to get to design a Christmas room makeover for Issa & Thomas, and their 7 month old fraternal twins, Etienne and Elise. They recently spent several months in Canada to be with Thomas’s Mother before she passed. With it being the first Christmas since her passing, I really loved the idea of getting to decorate a place for them to celebrate and settle in for the holidays.
When Issa applied, she sent along a few images of her dream holiday space (like this one), and I think we nailed it! This was their before space…
Their original space had great bones already. All we really changed was the wall color to brighten things up with Sherwin Williams Pure White (our favorite!), and new focal point mantle, and decor.
At first we tried to talk Issa into an accent wall, but she really loved the idea of a clean, modern white. The white really did make a huge difference with that!
In lieu of the accent wall, we installed a distressed wood mantle in place of the white moulding version that was original to the room. They never used the fireplace but wanted to keep the option of using it in the future, so we removed the old log set and filled it with pre-cut firewood for a temporary filler.
Luckily we had quite a few awesome volunteers for the day to help us knock everything out quickly! Chris & Mai (farthest left) are regular MVP’s when it comes to Sugar & Cloth happenings, plus we had the Lowe’s volunteer crew — from left to right: Melvin, Kaitlyn, Phylicia, John, and Michelle. And then there’s Jared and I, of course. Don’t mind my no shower look, I take any chance I can to skip the morning routine, and renos are one of them! :)
This group was so fun to have around, and we got the painting and furniture install done lightning fast. Even with enough time to do a quick mannequin challenge after hearing the song come up at least five times that afternoon, haha!
Because the room had a tendency of being darker most of the day, we left the window treatments minimal and used light filtering curtains from Allen + Roth to complete the built in window seat space without taking away from the natural light.
Since they have two little ones, we opted for furniture and decor pieces that had rounded edges, were soft, and cozy. Much like them, ha! But seriously, shatterproof ornaments and a tree that didn’t shed were a must. We also skipped the traditional coffee table and opted for gold poufs for easy climing on and resting your feet.
Even though we were focusing on the holidays for the room, I did add artwork that could go with anything. I also secretly wanted to keep this giant cactus print for myself, but I resisted! And as always, you can never go wrong in my book with a touch of gold in the form of cabinet pulls.
What do you all think?! Honestly, this was so much fun that I wish we could gift them several times a year. As much as I love redecorating our own spaces, it was so fulfilling getting to see it all come together for someone else.
Lowe’s, we owe you a million times for sponsoring all of this and letting us play house for someone else! To the volunteer team: thank you, thank you for spending your football Sunday with us!
