A Joyful and Modern Dining Room for Summer
It may not technically be considered Summer yet, but since it’s already in the nineties in Houston, it sure feels like it. I’m half super pumped, and half terrified by how hot it’s going to be by the time August rolls around, but I’m ready to bring on the warm weather entertaining either way!
Air Wick actually asked me to design a space inspired by Summer, and to me Summer means colorful, bright rooms that are perfect for entertaining, while also keeping a laid back, yet cheery, environment. It’s all about visitors coming and going, game nights, late night chats, and pool days. To find the perfect scent for the room the ideal room I had in mind, I used the Air Wick Scent Decorator and chose images that represented Summer to me, and it recommended the Summer Delights scented oil for a joyful space. Not exactly a shocker that I’d get the joyful one, ha!
To make it a running theme, I put together a joyful and modern dining room for summer with a few simple tips and tricks that you can use to create a similar feel in your own home!…
It’s all about incorporating color in moderation and balancing it out with deeper hues, like this rug that mixes a deep raspberry with pops of blue, golden yellow, and oranges. You can switch it out to have just for Summer, or keep it year round to mix and match seasonally.
For instance, these blue Eames style chairs really make the light blues in the rug pop, for a fun, vibrant statement piece to add to a more traditional mid century table.
I think we can all agree that even with the prettiest decor, a staple room scent can make or break a space (hello fellow pet owners, I know you know what I mean! and trust me, one warmer can transform an entire room, small or large!). To play off of our signature Summer oil warmer theme, I incorporated token Summer plants for greenery, like this cacti, a potted parlor palm tree, and single palm leaf for the table centerpiece to bring it all together.
Adding colorful vases is also a really inexpensive way to add joyful colors and patterns to a space, while also not having to commit to anything year round. Even just pairing them with my favorite colorful Blendo glasses, a slice of lemon, and cupcakes makes the table feel inviting, energetic, and ready for guests!
Interchanging artwork is another simple swap that you can make with your usual decor as we head into warmer months. Jared and I like to get old landscape or architecture photos from trips we’ve taken together printed and framed so that they’re nostalgic, but also customizable so I can add just the right feel to a room depending on color and style. In this case, we tied in the blue again with an abstract architecture print that was gifted to us.
Linens and pillows are also game changers for a space, and I played off of the Summer theme with tasseled pillows in desert-style textures to add interest and balance out the traditional furniture elements in the space.
I’ve also found that you can never have enough extra pretty seating areas or discrete storage for game nights when it comes to having regular guests!
For times when we’re not getting things just right for entertaining, I like to have a signature scent that we use all of the time. Like the idea of having that signature scent that you always remembered from happy memories when you were little, that you can pick and choose. For everyday I love the Sunny Morning Linen room spray for a staple, fresh scent throughout the house, but you can also use the Air Wick Scent Decorator to discover a new personal fave.
