What was your first car? + The Weekly Edit

I’m throwing in a fun twist to this week’s weekly edit with a question I find SO fascinating. What was your first car?! Mine was….hideous. Like truly. My Dad loved it, but that may explain everything, haha.

It was a 1992 (I got my license in 2004, by the way) two door Oldsmobile Toronado in maroon. For obvious reasons (aka fugliness), I don’t have many photos of good ole’ Tor, but she looked just like the below image. I may never forget it, ha! My friends always joked that it looked like the inside of an airplane because of the number of buttons she had.

She also GUZZLED gas, so I was always coming up with things to mention to my Dad that might be wrong with it so he would take it for a test drive because it would always miraculously come back full of gas haha. Thanks, Dad!

Not that my parents had the money to buy a new car anyway, but my Dad always said teenagers don’t need nice cars, just safe cars, and man that thing was a real tank.

For kicks and giggles, I checked the current Kelly Blue Book value for today of the 192,000 miles she on her, and she’s worth approximately $880, haha!

What about you? Did you have a brand new car, bought it yourself, or drove a hand-me-down?! Let’s hear it!

Now for your weekly links —

Is it ankle boot weather yet?!

I want to go here so bad!

This is possibly my number one most used party supply.

Baby photo shoot hack for the win, haha!

Does it make me a true adult or just a hoarder because I want this for my garage so badly?

Lol to this passport photo mishap…

  1. Oh. My. Word. I lucked out with a used Mazda 626 (they don’t even make them anymore!). Had that baby for 2 years then my mom decided she wanted to trade for my car, so I got stuck with a crazy old minivan. Then that died (of course) and I drove around a 1992 gold Buick LeSabre. Oh boy was it the absolute worst!

  2. I get my first car on Tuesday and i’m so excited I can’t cope! Its a red & white limited edition citroen ds3, I’ve paid for it myself but my dad came with me whilst i was looking, I find car dealerships so intimidating!

  3. Too funny! I also had my first cars YEARS before I was 16. My Dad was into cars and had picked it up for me. It sat in the driveway (though I used to sit in and play tapes, HA!). I REALLY wanted an all white car (some things never change). It was a White 1992 2-door. Hyundai Scoupe. And for Christmas I was thrilled to get white tiger seat covers HAHAH!

  4. My first car was a 1969 Camaro, that my grandfather got me at an auction (it was 1978, before you were born). It was a former San Francisco vice-cop’s car, so the engine was souped up and it was fast. However, it didn’t have power steering, and the first time I tried to drive it, I couldn’t make a turn. (I learned and got used to it.) It was ice blue metallic and it cost me $850. But it was a gas-guzzler, so when I went off to college, I sold it for a more practical, 1971 red Super Beetle. I loved them both and wish I had them back now.

  5. I got a 1996 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup truck… in 2003. I totally agree that kids should drive safe cars and boy was that truck a tank. I ran into the back of someone once and it totaled their car and my truck was fine. :/
Also the gas gauge didn’t work so I had to make sure to calculate how many miles I had gone on the tank before running out… yea, I ran out of gas in the middle of roads often.

  6. In 2005 I got my first car – ’95 maroon Pathfinder with gold swish on the sides for that extra 90s touch haha! I didn’t hate it at first because I wanted a car, but there were quirks that made me hate it. Couldn’t take it to a car was because water would pour in, could only unlock from passenger side (so safe) gas guzzler and my dad’s “fixes” made it worse lol!

    • A Mazda 626 is what my brother had! It was definitely several years old, but not nearly as bad as Tor. Lol to the minivan though! haha xoxo

  8. Mine was a 1998 gold Saturn SL2 with a casette tape deck…purchased from my great-grandmother. The ultimate grandma car! I got it when I got my license in 2008. It only had 3000 miles on it from the 10 years my great-grandma had it haha. Within a year or two of getting my car, Saturn went out of business. When I finally gave the car to my sister in 2014, it still only had 16,000 miles on it. I love first car stories!

  9. This is the strangest! I had the same car, same colour except the 1989 model I inherited from my grandfather. In the year before we finally sold it, I hit a pothole which caused it to honk every time I turned the steering wheel to the right. We took it in to be fixed several times but they never seemed able to quite get it because inevitably it would start up again several days later – I got a lot of rude hand gestures! In the end my dad went to a meeting of Oldsmobile collectors and sold it to someone there who was interested in restoring it – apparently they were somewhat rare?

  10. I got my drivers license in 1992… and my first car was a green 1980 Datsun 210. They didn’t even make Datsun’s at that time. Someone nicknamed it Tadpole and it stuck because it really was the perfect name. The radio was the old kind with the dial, so my dad got me a new radio with a tape deck but it would only fit in the glove box.
And the glove box latch didn’t always stay latched, so we could hit a bump and the glove box flies open. You also learn who your true friends are when they willingly ride in your car (I had a “friend” who wouldn’t.) So many memories with that car!

    • Hahaha!! First off, I LOVE the name tadpole, lol! Second, I totally hear you on finding our who you true friends are!! Any friend that was always like “no, don’t worry, I can drive us” I was suspicious of haha!

  11. I finally just bought my first car! I’ve had my licence for ages but living in a big city with public transit everywhere it never made sense for me to have one. Now we’ve moved to a smaller town and even though I’ve only been driving it a week so far, I’m so happy with my 2007 Volkswagen Golf.

  12. I drove a ’99 Chevy Malibu (in 2008) that was the weirdest shade of green! Sooo ugly but I loved that car! I hit a deer shortly after I got it so then drove it around for 3 more years with a giant dent in the top right hood because the car wasn’t worth the cost of fixing it hahahaha

  13. My first car was a hand me down from my older sister. It drove well that is until it decided to be a diva and just stop working in traffic. Those were interesting times.
