Carrots may seem like an unconventional ingredient for mixing into cocktails. However, with their natural sweetness and earthy undertones, carrot-based libations provide a flavorful and inventive option for those looking to expand their mixology repertoire. Plus, the carrots add such a beautiful orange color.
And can we talk about how cute the mini carrot garnishes are?!? I, Ashley have been adding them to crudités platters, toasts, and of course cocktails for the past few weeks.
With some kick from the spicy muddled ginger, creamy egg white and edible flowers, this tipple is a great way to add some spring flavors into your cocktails!
Ingredients Needed
- Carrot juice — If possible and you have time, make your carrot juice at home using a juicer for a pure and vibrant taste. Alternatively, choose high-quality store-bought carrot juice without added sugars or preservatives.
- Vodka
- Fresh lemon juice or lime juice
- Simple syrup
- Ginger — Peel and slice the ginger into quarter-sized pieces to allow for easy muddling or infusion. Adjust the ginger quantity based on your spice preference.
- Egg white
- Tiny rainbow carrots — Optional for garnish. We found the petite carrots online at Gourmet Sweet Botanicals. Sometimes they are also available at the farmer’s market in the spring. Or opt for rainbow baby carrots.
- Edible flowers — Optional for garnish
How to Make a Carrot Cocktail
1 — In a cocktail shaker, add the sliced ginger. Muddle the ginger to release its flavors. If you prefer a stronger ginger kick, muddle a bit more.
2 — To the shaker (without ice), add the carrot juice, vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white. Dry shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.
3 — Add ice to the shaker and shake again for another 15-20 seconds. This chills the cocktail and further incorporates the flavors.
4 — Strain the cocktail into a chilled glass using a fine mesh strainer to ensure a smooth texture. Discard any small ginger or ice particles.
5 — Optional: Garnish with mini-carrots and/or edible flowers.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Dry shake with egg white: When adding the egg white, dry shake the ingredients first (shake without ice) to create a rich foam. Then, shake with ice to chill the cocktail.
- Experiment with vodka varieties: Try different varieties of vodka to find one that complements the ginger and carrot flavors. Some may prefer a clean and neutral vodka, while others may enjoy a hint of botanicals. Bourbon is also another popular option when it comes to carrot drinks, especially if you want a carrot whiskey cocktail.
- Play with spices: Feel free to experiment with additional spices, such as a dash of ground cinnamon or a twist of black pepper, to add complexity to the cocktail.
