How to Make a Scalloped Tablecloth

Step 1 — Measure and Cut the Tablecloth

Start by laying your tablecloth flat on a large surface and placing it over your table to measure the proper fit. You’ll want a slight overhang of about 6–10 inches on each side, depending on your preference and table height.

Once you’ve determined the ideal length, use a fabric marker or chalk to mark where the tablecloth should be trimmed. Remove it from the table, and carefully cut along your marked lines to create a clean, even edge. This will be the base for your scalloped design.

Step 2 — Trace Your Scalloped Pattern

Using a bowl or round object, trace half-circle shapes along the edge of the tablecloth. Keep spacing consistent for a polished, professional look.

Tip: Tape down the corners of your fabric to keep it from shifting while you trace. You can also fold the fabric in half before tracing to ensure your scallops are evenly spaced and symmetrical.

Step 3 — Cut the Scalloped Edges

Carefully cut along the traced lines using sharp fabric scissors. Take your time. This is what creates that signature scalloped finish.

 Tips for the Best Results

  • Iron your tablecloth before starting for better accuracy.
  • Keep scallop sizes consistent for a clean finish.
  • Practice on scrap fabric if you’re new to cutting patterns.
  • So that way, when you cut along your outlines, you only have to trace and cut twice, once for the length and width of your tablecloth.

Instructions

  • If your drop cloth or curtain panel is a bit bigger than the table you want to cover, trim the edges a little bit to just a bit bigger than the size you’d like for the finished product to be.
  • Next, trace one-half of your bowl onto the edge of your fabric.
Then, repeat this on all of the sides.
(You can also tape down the corners of your fabric so it doesn’t move during your trace around.)
You can also fold the fabric in half before you trace.
  • So that way, when you cut along your outlines, you only have to trace and cut twice, once for the length and width of your tablecloth.
