Geometric Accent Wall & Our Guest Bedroom Makeover
You gotta love a welcoming room for guests and this guest bedroom makeover will do the trick since I’m sharing how to paint an accent wall too!
In case you’re wondering, “Why did they start with a guest bedroom makeover?”, I hope you find comfort in knowing I’m asking myself the exact same thing. Ha!
Jared and I are still sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Gwen’s room has paper blackout blinds pinned on the window. And our guest room before and after now feels like a luxury hotel suite in comparison.
Riddle me that, folks! Okay, okay, let’s get serious.
We’ve partnered with HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams to use one of their designer-inspired Color Collections as my color palette for TWO distinct rooms in the new house. I’m not one to pass up a color opportunity. So obviously YES.
I decided on the Vintage Finds Color Collection for the guest bedroom as my first makeover because I knew I wanted to do something not-so-neutral for this space.
Spoiler alert: Gwen’s room is up next on this Color Collection makeover list!
This is where my accent ceiling and hand-painted accent wall comes into play! I feel like a lot of people love the idea of a statement element but aren’t sure how to paint an accent wall.
Luckily this minimal line wall is super easy to do by hand with a few simple measurements, a pencil, and an accent wall color that pops.
I opted for HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Bosc Pear (HGSW2162) color as my accent wall color. And it’s a subtle golden yellow that dreams are made of!
It really stands out on the Pure White wall while still being an understated color and subdued pattern overall.
The colors within the Color Collections are easy to mix and match, so picking the ceiling color was an added bonus!
I’d say the final reveal is equal parts minimal and colorful. Don’t you agree?!
The Before & After Makeover
As you can tell, there was a bit more than just painting done to this space based on the before and after!
While I’m happy to take credit for my handy accent wall, our construction team did all the scraping of the popcorn ceilings and replacing the floors, AC, you name it.
We’ve had quite a run with the new house. (See updates here and here for that backstory.)
I’m not a fan of rugged tile floors so we replaced them with oak alpine flooring and it really made all of the difference on giving us a clean slate to work with for the new design!
I also have to say that I literally squealed with excitement over how CUTE this gold and white ceiling fan looks on top of the HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Lotus Flower (HGSW2046) accent ceiling color.
Who knew you could cry from happiness over a ceiling fan and a little pop of pink?!
As for styling, I pulled inspiration from the Color Refresh (HGSW1306), which is also found in the Vintage Finds Color Collection as an accent in the room with the bedspread.
It doesn’t always require painting something to get good inspiration from the Color Collections!
Materials and Tools Needed to Paint an Accent Wall | Our Guest Bedroom Makeover
Pencil
Measuring tape
Small level
1 inch angled Purdy paint brush
HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY Interior Paint in the colors of your choice
You’ll only need a few simple supplies for painting this accent wall, the hardest will be narrowing down which colors you want to go with!
If you’re not sure what color combinations suit your space (or how they fit together!) the Color Collections will give you a little confidence boost for knowing which colors already complement each other to give you a starting point.
The beauty of recreating this guest bedroom accent wall is that the lines and spacing are imperfect.
How to Paint an Accent Wall | Our Guest Bedroom Makeover
Step 1:
Decide how large you want the scale of your pattern to be.
For me, I wanted there to be ample white space for adding artwork and things. I decided to keep the lines short and used my small level as a guide for the length of each line as well as making the width between the lines the same as the level.
My lines are 8 inches long and separated by a 2.5 inch gap to be exact.
Once you’ve gauged the size of your line groupings (if you’re doing something custom) you can get an idea of how far apart you want them to be based on your wall size. I spaced my line groupings 2 feet apart.
For instance, you don’t want to start painting with a two-foot space in between each grouping if that means you’ll be left will a large blank space at the top of the wall from using that pattern.
Step 2:
Measure and mark your line pattern on the wall lightly in pencil BEFORE any painting begins. This way magic erasers will be your friend if you decide to switch things up along the way.
Start with your first column of horizontal lines on the left side of the wall, then move toward the right side alternating horizontal and vertical line groupings.
Step 3:
Using your Purdy 1-inch angled brush and the paint color of your choice to retrace your final penciled pattern on the wall and let dry.
Guest Room Ideas and Furniture Sources
We had QUITE the work cut out for us on the original bones of the room.
As with the rest of the house so far, we enlisted the help of Genesis CP as our construction team. (See our living room makeover here!)
On top of tons of hiccups behind the walls like new AC and venting, new plumbing, and electrical rewiring, Genesis CP helped us with scraping all of the popcorn ceiling and wall textures.
Plus, they aso installed all new Stuga Studio Oak Alpine flooring in place of the old tile in the guest room.
The ceiling fan is Hunter Fan and the wall sconces are World Market. We purchased the bed, picture frames, and rattan deck chair are all from Ikea.
We also DIY’ed the floating nightstands from Etsy with a new coat of paint and moon drawer handles also from Etsy.
I absolutely love the patterned bedspread which was from Target a few years back. And the desk and accent decor are from At Home.
Add in a few pops of gold and natural wood elements, and you’ve got yourself a cozy guest space! You can find all of the room styling and furniture resources in our next post here!
