Lava Flow Recipe
The Lava Flow is the ultimate frozen tropical cocktail featuring light rums, coconut, pineapple and strawberry.
The Lava Flow is a refreshing and rich cocktail full of tropical flavors of coconut, pineapple, and a swirl of strawberry to finish up this deliciously addictive drink.
With every sip, we guarantee that you’ll get transported to a Hawaiian resort where it’s (with good reasons) a bar favorite. The Lava Flow is a cross between a Piña Colada and Miami Vice. It gets its name because it looks like lava flowing from a volcano.
How to Create the Swirl Effect?
This tropical drink is equally delicious as it is visually pleasing. To achieve the swirl effect, all you need to do is pour the red rum strawberry mixture on top of the white pineapple coconut base. Next, stir the drink with a straw to create some “lava flow” movements, and there you have it!
Ingredients Needed
- Coconut rum — We used Malibu Coconut Rum, which is our brand of choice when also making a Malibu Bay Breeze and Vegas Bomb Shot.
- White rum
- Cream of coconut — Not to be confused with coconut cream, cream of coconut is a a sweet coconut syrup used in cocktails. You can use store-bought cream of coconut or it’s so easy to make at home. Get the simple homemade recipe in our Bushwacker recipe post.
- Pineapple — Fresh or frozen
- Strawberries — Fresh or frozen
- Ice
Useful Equipment to Make this Drink
We love blended cocktails for good reasons. They are easy and quick to make without requiring too many equipment pieces. To make the Lava Flow recipe, you are going to need —
- Jigger — To measure the pour of each liquid.
- Blender
- Long tall glass — Like a hurricane glass or collins glass
- Knife and cutting board
- Straw
- Paper cocktail umbrella — Optional for garnish
- Flower — Optional for garnish
How to Make a Lava Flow Cocktail
1 — In a blender, add 1/2 cup of ice, the sliced strawberries, and the coconut and white rums. Blend until a smooth slushy consistency is achieved.
2 — Pour the mixture into the glass.3 — Then, rinse the blender, and add more ice, pineapple, and the cream of coconut. Again, blend until you achieve the same slushy consistency. 4 — Slowly pour over the mixture over your first red rum mixture. Stir with a straw to create the swirl effect.
5 — Optional: Prepare your garnishes. Cut a pineapple slice into a triangle with a slit at the tip to sit on the glass. Add any flower of your choice with a paper umbrella.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Because this is a frozen drink, this cocktail is best served immediately. Once it melts, it’s just not the same.
- Using fresh fruit is always best for any recipe. However, since this is a frozen drink, opting for frozen fruit is fine as it will give the tropical drink a slushy texture.
- To make a virgin version, skip the alcohol and replace it with milk or coconut water. The kids will love it!
