What is a Sugar Scrub?

Sugar scrubs are exfoliating skincare products made by combining granulated sugar with a moisturizing base, such as oil or lotion, and often infused with additional ingredients like essential oils or fragrances.

When applied to the skin, sugar scrubs help to remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin smoother, softer, and more radiant. They are commonly used in skincare routines to improve texture, unclog pores, and promote a healthy glow.

So they not only serve as a face scrub but also a body scrub. And we weren’t exaggerating when we said that we are obsessed with DIY beauty projects. Some of our other sugar scrub recipes include our sand art sugar scrub, vanilla orange mint sugar scrub, and citrus sugar scrub.

Ingredients Needed

  • Granulated sugar —  Either white or brown sugar works fine. Brown sugar is a great choice for its gentle exfoliation and moisturizing properties. White sugar can be used for a stronger scrub.
  • Coconut oil
  • Instant coffee grounds — The finer the grind, the more gentle the scrub. Do not swap out for regular coffee grounds. Sugar scrubs are always made with instant coffee. Ground coffee can clog pores. Plus, if you are using a coffee scrub for its skin firm caffeine benefits, the caffeine from coffee grounds can only be released through heat.
  • Honey
  • Cinnamon

Ingredient Benefits

Coffee reduces dark circles under the eyes by constricting blood vessels. It can also be used to treat acne due to its antibacterial properties. Coffee helps exfoliate skin because of its granular texture.

Honey is natural humectant that helps to hydrate the skin.

Cinnamon is an easy, inexpensive solution to treat your dry skin. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties that can naturally combat acne. Cinnamon coffee scrub for exfoliation will help get rid of dead skin cells, revealing a more youthful appearance.

How to Adjust the Texture of Your DIY Sugar Scrub

We always get a lot of comments about our DIY coffee scrub being too runny or too dry. This is really just personal preference.

So if you find it’s too runny, add more sugar. If you’re making this sugar coffee scrub solely to be a body scrub, you can even add in some coarse salt. And if it’s too dry, add a tad more coconut oil or honey. Or add a few drops of orange oil, vanilla extract or sweet almond oil for additional fragrance.

Using the Scrub

  • Exfoliate: Gently massage the scrub into your skin, focusing on areas that need exfoliation. Avoid sensitive areas like your face.
  • Rinse: Rinse the scrub off thoroughly with warm water.
  • Moisturize: Apply a moisturizer to your skin after using the scrub to lock in moisture.

How to Store

Store your homemade coffee scrub in an airtight sealed container. It will last for a couple of weeks at room temperature in your bathroom. You can increase its shelf span by storing it in the fridge.
