It’s about that time again for our token milkshake shots. And now this Dark Chocolate Espresso Milkshake Shots version is rich and chocolatey. Since technically these are mini shots, they should come free of sugar highs.

But just in case, you have more than one, the little dose of espresso mixed in might help calm the sugar high that usually ensues. Not that that happens to us, of course. Let’s just say that we are no singing-to-the-birds version of Snow White until we have our coffee in the morning.

It’s pretty much our little happy place to always have caffeine. So any reason we can get to make the rest of the day filled with coffee without needing intervention is a good one. You can also try this Creme de Menthe Ice Cream Shots, which are mixed with other drinks or added to ice cream and desserts. It’s also used in some savory foods too!

Ingredients and Tools Needed to Make Dark Chocolate Espresso Milkshake Shots

  • Vanilla bean ice cream
  • Single serving of chilled fresh espresso — We used our Nespresso VertuoLine (in courtesy of Nespresso). It’s an upgrade to our previous Nespresso maker that we obsessed over and begged our mom to buy us for Christmas last year. True story. Best gift we ever begged for besides my Kitchen Aid Mixer.
  • Tiny scoop of ice — Optional just to thicken the shots
  • Dark chocolate shot glasses
  • Instant coffee grinds — To sprinkle for garnish

How to Make Dark Chocolate Espresso Milkshake Shots

Step 1 — Make fresh espresso in advance to let it chill.

Or you can even cheat and use the Nespresso frother on cool with a splash of cream to speed things up.

I’d advise you on the best route to make fresh espresso without the machine except for my only knowledge of making decent coffee is by using pods and pressing the only button on my Nespresso maker. Don’t judge me…

Step 2 — Next, mix in all of the other ingredients, minus the instant coffee garnish, into a mixer and blend.

Step 3 — While everything is still nicely chilled, fill the dark chocolate cups and add a sprinkle of instant coffee for the garnish and serve!

You have to eat them quickly, but that shouldn’t be a problem.
