What’s the Difference Between a Regular Lemon and a Meyer Lemon? Can They Be Subsituted?
Regular lemons are much larger and brighter than Meyer lemons. Even the regular lemon tree is larger in size than the Meyer lemon tree.
Meyer lemons are like a cross between a regular lemon and a mandarin orange. It has a thinner deep yellow almost orange skin. Its pulp is dark yellow, and its shape is round like an orange.
As far as taste, the fresh Meyer lemon is less acidic and sweeter with a hint of floral. It’s not as tangy. So if you only have regular lemons, you may need simple syrup versus sugar to balance out the tanginess.
How to Make a Sparkling Meyer Lemonade Cocktail
1 — In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add in the gin, freshly squeezed Meyer lemon juice, and sugar. Shake well until chillded.
2 — Strain mixture into a collins glass with ice.
3 — Top with champagne and soda water. Stir and garnish with mint sprig and Meyer lemon slice.
How to Turn this Lemonade Cocktail into a Mocktail
Some people who are taking it easy after the holidays or participating in Dry January can enjoy this fizzy, citrusy concoction too.
Swapping out champagne for sparkling apple cider, although not the same flavor profile, still gives the drink a lot of depth and helps carry you through the dry month without feeling like you are depriving yourself of tasty drinks.
We wouldn’t do that, now would we?! There is no mocking with this mocktail, it’s just plain delicious. Plus, it’s perfect for the kids.
One tip that we have? Serve your drinks out of pretty glasses. Drinking out of pretty glasses makes you feel fancy, whether cocktails, mocktails, or just water!
