One of our favorite things about this drink recipe is how incredibly versatile it is. It is served frozen or on the rocks. You can easily adapt it to your preference whether you want it to be strong and boozy or light and fruity.
What Does the Cocktail Taste Like?
With a combination of rum, coconut liqueur, pineapple juice, and grenadine syrup, the Bahama Mama features a tropical flavor profile that’s a delightful balance of sweetness and tanginess.
There are many variations of the Bahama Mama recipe using different types of rum and other tropical fruit juices like pineapple juice or orange juice.
Bahama Mama Ingredients
White rum — Used to amp up the alcohol content. But in terms of flavor it does not add much, so it can be considered optional if you want a lighter drink.
Dark rum — If possible, choose one with some spices in it.
Coconut rum — For the tropical and sweet touch.
Grenadine syrup — For sweetness and color. It is a staple in cocktail making so it’s worth buying a bottle.
Lime wedge — For garnish. You can also opt for an orange wedge, lime wheel, cherry and/or pineapple leaves.
Lime juice — For added freshness and brightness.
How to Make Bahama Mama
1 — In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour in the white rum, dark rum, coconut rum, fresh orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine, and fresh lime juice.
2 — Shake well until the mixture is thoroughly combined and chilled.

4 — Garnish with the lime wedge and a cocktail umbrella.
Recipe Notes and Tips
Chill your ingredients beforehand:
If you are making the juices at home (fresh is always best), prep them in advance and chill them in the fridge. This drink is best served cold so also chill your alcohol.
How to create an ombre effect:
Optionally, you can also layer the grenadine at the bottom of the glass before adding the rest of the ingredients to create a visually appealing gradient effect. This is our preferred method as seen in the photos!
For an Iced Bahama Mama:
Mix all the ingredients in a food processor or blender with crushed ice for a frozen cocktail.
Adjust the measurements to your liking:
Feel free to adjust the amounts of each rum according to your preference. You can even make the Bahama Mama without the white rum. We recommend not skipping the coconut rum since it impacts the final flavor of the cocktail massively.
