What Does the Grapefruit Crush Drink Taste Like?
The Grapefruit Crush is a well-balanced cocktail that is both sweet yet tangy. It features citrus flavors, topped with a slight bubbly fizz.
Mainly composed of grapefruit juice, the Grapefruit Crush cocktail recipe also combines with vodka, triple sec, lemon-lime soda (and a splash of fresh squeezed lime juice).
Some recipes use club soda instead of lemon-lime soda and even include simple syrup for some added sweetness.
The Grapefruit Crush is a cousin of the classic Orange Screwdriver (made with orange juice and vodka). And it’s also a variation of the Orange Crush.
Ingredients Needed to Make a Grapefruit Crush Cocktail
Vodka — Choose plain vodka to make the grapefruit juice shine. Alternatively, you can swap the vodka for tequila, white rum, or gin.
Grapefruit juice — Using freshly squeezed juice is always best. But if you are in a rush, bottled juice works fine too.
Triple sec — A classic liqueur in cocktail making, it will amplify the citrus flavors while adding some orange and sweet notes. You can use simple triple sec or fancy Cointreau liqueur.
Lemon lime soda — Use the brand of your preference.
Lime juice — Just a splash is needed.
Grapefruit triangles or grapefruit slices — Optional for garnish.
Grapefruit wedge — Optional for garnish.
How to Make Grapefruit Crush
1 — In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add in the vodka, triple sec and grapefruit juice. Shake well until combined and chilled.
2 — Pour the mix into a glass filled with crushed ice and some of the grapefruit triangles (optional). Make sure to leave enough space for some lemon-lime soda.
3 — Top off the glass with lemon-lime soda and a splash of fresh lime juice.
4 — Optional: Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
Recipe Notes & Tips
Type of ice to use:
This cocktail calls for crushed ice. But use bigger chunks of crused ice to avoid the cocktail from watering down too quickly.
Adjusting the sweetness or tartness:
If your grapefruit juice is too tangy, add a bit more lemon-lime soda. Or add about 1/2 teaspoon of splash of simple syrup for extra sweetness.
Experimenting with the Grapefruit Crush ingredients:
Though we prefer plain vodka to allow the grapefruit juice to shine, feel free to try grapefruit flavored vodka or liquor. Instead lemon-lime soda, test out using sparkling water or club soda.
