Super creamy and decadent, the classic Mudslide Cocktail recipe is a dessert drink filled with coffee, vanilla, and chocolate flavors.
Why is it Called Mudslide?
The cocktail gets its name because the chocolate syrup that drips alongside the glass looks like a mudslide.
The Mudslide was invented in the 1970s at Wreck Bar, located in the Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean. A customer tried to order a White Russian, and since the bar didn’t have any cream on hand, they switched it for Baileys Irish Cream instead.
Ingredients You’ll Need to Make a Classic Mudslide
Vodka — Use the brand of your choice
Kahlua Liqueur — For the coffee flavoring
Baileys Irish Cream — The creamy and vanilla component. It’s great to always have on hand since it’s found in many cocktails and Baileys Irish cream desserts.
Heavy whipping cream — For the extra creaminess
Chocolate syrup — To garnish the glass
Chocolate shavings — For garnish. Purchase them at the store or you make your own with a grater or vegetable peeler.
Whipped cream — Optional: For garnish
How to Make the Classic Mudslide
1 — Prep the glass by dripping the chocolate syrup around the inside of a tall glass filled with ice.
2 — In a cocktail shaker, add ice, vodka, Kahlua, and Baileys. Shake well until chilled.
3 — Strain the mixture and pour into the tall glass. Top up with some whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
Recipe Notes and Tips
For a lighter version:
Omit the chocolate syrup and heavy cream if you want to have a lighter version of the Mudslide Cocktail. However, we don’t recommend skipping out on the chocolate shavings. It’s an essential part of the drink for the final chocolate finish.
Use big ice cubes:
To avoid watering down the cocktail, use big ice cubes and avoid small or crushed ice.
The Mudslide tastes best cold. So chill everything (the glass and the ingredients) beforehand.
