Ingredients and Tools Needed
- Ice cream — We used strawberry ice cream. If you want to go with the classic vanilla or chocolate flavors, we have an easy no churn ice cream recipe.
- Dark chocolate — Finely chopped
- White chocolate — Finely chopped. We used 2 white chocolate bars.
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Medium heatproof bowl
- Medium saucepan
- Cookie or ice cream scoop
- Wooden or metal skewer or fork — For a fool-proof dipping method, to remove the ice cream from the chocolate.
How to Make Ice Cream Bon Bons
While these are relatively easy to assemble, you’ll need to work fast so the ice cream doesn’t melt into the chocolate.
1 — Place a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in the freezer.
2 — Melt the dark and white chocolates together in a medium heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Stir often, until chocolates have just melted. Remove from heat and transfer chocolate into a separate bowl to cool slightly.
3 — Working quickly, scoop out an ice cream ball. Drop the packed ice cream scoop into the bowl of melted chocolate. Coating it evenly.
4 — Carefully removed the dipped ice cream with a skewer. Shake off any excess chocolate.
5 — Place the dipped ice cream bon bon onto the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining ice cream. Then, freeze until firm and chocolate coating hardens completely, about 30 minutes.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Once frozen, store bonbons in an air-tight container for 2-3 weeks in the freezer.
- If you don’t have a cookie scoop, then make sure that you are tightly packing your ice cream ball before dipping it. If it’s not condensed, it will likely melt into the warm chocolate.
- Allow the melted chocolate to cool slightly before dipping the ice cream to avoid melting the ice cream too much.
- When heating the chocolate, keep the water at a low simmer and avoid letting it touch the bottoms of your bowls to prevent burning the chocolate.
- If the chocolate thickens while dipping, simply return it to the heat source for a few seconds to re-thin it.
- If you have extra chocolate left over, drizzle the remaining chocolate over the frozen bonbons for a decorative touch.
- For a fun and festive touch, you can sprinkle chopped nuts, sprinkles, or edible glitter onto the wet chocolate before it freezes.
