Dalgona Coffee | What Is Whipped Coffee?
Whipped coffee, also called Dalgona Coffee or Beaten Coffee, is a popular coffee drink made by whipping equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and boiling water together until light and fluffy. This coffee can be served hot or cold.
Dalgona coffee originated in South Korea. Dalgona is a spongy South Korean coffee candy that has a frothy and fluffy appearance. It became hugely popular worldwide thanks to social media, both for its photogenic look and its rich, indulgent flavor.

Ingredients Needed to Make Whipped Coffee
- Instant coffee
- Sugar: Adjust to taste
- Boiling hot water
- Cinnamon (optional)
- Milk of choice: Dairy or non-dairy
- Ice cubes: Optional for iced coffee version

How to Make the Best Easy Whipped Coffee
1 — Combine ingredients: In a small mixing bowl, add 2 tablespoons each of instant coffee, sugar, and boiling water.
2 — Whip until fluffy: Using a handheld electric mixer, beat the mixture on medium-low speed until it becomes thick and fluffy, like whipped cream. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula and keep mixing.
3 — Adjust sweetness: Taste the whipped coffee base. If you’d like it sweeter, add the optional third tablespoon of sugar. Continue whipping until the mixture is pale golden brown, light, and airy. This usually takes 3–5 minutes. The longer you beat it, the fluffier the beaten coffee becomes. The color will also become lighter as you whip more air in.
4 — Prepare your milk: Pour 8 ounces of milk into a glass. For hot coffee, warm the milk first. For iced coffee, fill the glass with ice cubes before adding the milk.
5 — Add whipped coffee: Spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top of the milk. Stir well with a straw or spoon, or sip both layers together. It’s up to you! Try sprinkling cinnamon or cocoa powder on top for extra flavor.

Recipe Notes and Tips
- Make it iced: For an iced version, add ice cubes to the bottom of your glass before pouring in the milk and topping with whipped coffee.
- No mixer? No problem: If you don’t have a hand mixer, you can still make whipped coffee using a blender, immersion blender, stand mixer, or even a whisk. Hand whisking takes the longest, but the result is the same.
- Watch for the right texture: No matter which method you use, keep mixing until the coffee turns a light golden brown and fluffy, like whipped cream.
- Use a large glass: To avoid overflow, choose a tall or wide glass. This gives you room to stir the whipped coffee into the milk without spilling.

Frequently Asked Questions In Making Dalgona Coffee
What kind of instant coffee do I need?
Almost any type of instant coffee works well for Dalgona coffee (regular or decaf), depending on your preference. Just choose your favorite brand. The amount of instant coffee you use can also be adjusted based on how strong you like your coffee flavor. (Similar to recipes like chocolate chip banana bread or boozy mudslide icebox cake that use instant coffee, the exact measurement is flexible.)
Can I use ground coffee instead of instant?
No. Regular ground coffee will not froth properly. The chemical makeup of instant coffee is what allows it to whip up into that fluffy, cloud-like texture.
Can I use dairy-free milk?
Yes! You can use almost any type of milk for whipped coffee.
- Dairy milk: Whole milk makes the drink creamier and is a great option if you want a richer flavor.
- Dairy-free milk: Almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, and oat milk all work well for a vegan or dairy-free version.
What kind of sugar can I use?
Traditional Dalgona coffee is made with white granulated sugar, but there are plenty of alternatives. Note: Don’t skip the sweetener altogether. It helps stabilize the whipped coffee foam.
- Brown sugar (light or dark): Adds a hint of molasses flavor.
- Coconut sugar: A natural option with caramel notes.
- Maple syrup: Use equal parts as a liquid substitute.
- Keto-friendly sweeteners: Granulated erythritol or monk fruit sweetener work well (we recommend erythritol for consistency). We personally prefer erythritol when making keto-friendly recipes like with keto cheesecake.
Can I make whipped coffee without sugar?
Yes, but the texture may not be as fluffy. Here are some options:
- Swap sugar for honey or agave nectar.
- Use unsweetened coffee or espresso for a stronger flavor (you may still want a touch of sweetener).
- Add toppings like whipped cream or whipped milk to bring creaminess and mild sweetness without added sugar.
