Ingredients and Materials Needed

  • Fresh strawberries — One whole strawberry needed for each turkey. Wash the strawberries thoroughly and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Make sure they are completely dry, as any moisture can affect the chocolate coating.
  • Chocolate candy melts — Use milk chocolate or dark chocolate (for a vegan option) candy melts for the turkey’s body. You can melt chocolate chips. Just keep in mind that candy melts are meant for melting multiple times. Whereas chocolate chips are meant for baking so it will be thicker and harder to melt.
  • Candy corn — For the beak.
  • Fudge stripe cookies — Cut into halves for the tail feathers.
  • Parchment paper or wax paper
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • White royal icing — Optional for the eyes or use candy eyeballs.
  • Pretzel sticks — Optional for the turkey legs.

How to Make to Chocolate Thanksgiving Turkeys

1 — Slice the tops off of the strawberries. Making sure that you cut the “back” flat so that the tail stands upright.

2 — Place candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat it.

3 —  Dip the strawberries into the melted chocolate, swirling them around to coat it evenly. Allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl before placing them baking sheet lined with wax paper.

3 — Once the chocolate has slightly set but is still sticky, gently press the halved fudge stripe cookie onto the back of the strawberries to make the feathers. If you have any excess chocolate on the side of the turkeys, use a butter knife to cut it off.

4 — Then, press a candy corn on the tip of the chocolate covered strawberry to make the beaks.

5 — Optional: Using a toothpick, dab 2 dots of royal icing to the front of the strawberries. Or use candy eyeballs for the turkey’s eyes. You can also form legs with pretzel sticks. We opted to keep our chocolate strawberry turkeys simple and minimal.

6 — Let the turkeys sit at room temperature until the chocolate is completely set and firm. Then, carefully remove the turkeys from the wax paper and arrange them on a serving platter.
